Public cemetery sold for residential purposes

Takoradi, June 25, GNA - A Takoradi district magistrate on Wednesday, granted a sixty-eight year old unemployed 600 Ghana cedis bail with one surety for selling a public cemetery for estate development.

The accused pleaded not guilty and told the court that the land belonged to him and his family.

The case has been adjourned to June 22.

Prosecuting, Police Inspector Michael Ahiadzro told the court that the complainant Nana Kumitsia VI, the chief of Adientem near Takoradi and the accused, Kofi Awortwi, live in the same community. He said on June 14 the chief had information that a portion of the public cemetery was being developed and after some investigations it was found out that Awortwi had sold portions of the land for 600 Ghana cedis. A report was made to the police and he was arrested.
