Publish assets, accounts of parties – Court to EC

A Human Rights Court has ordered the Electoral Commission to publish all assets and audited account statements of all political parties in Ghana.

The court order is the culmination of a suit filed by private citizen, Lolan Ekow Sagoe-Moses, and pressure group Citizens Ghana Movement (CGM).

Ghana’s Political Parties Act 574 (section 21), provide that political parties shall within six months from December 31 of each year, file with the Commission: a return in the form specified by the Commission indicating – the state of its accounts, the sources of its funds, membership dues paid and contributions in cash or kind.

The suit by the plaintiffs was to have the court make the EC enforce that law as a way of “pushing for more transparency in the body politic of Ghana.”

Justice Anthony Yeboah, in his ruling, directed the election management body to publish a demand notice to all political parties to comply with the law within six calendar months from Friday, 9 February.
