Pupils abandon school to search for mushroom

Pupils of the Buabin Methodist Basic school, a farming community near Dunkwa-on-Offin in the Upper Denkyira East Municipality of the Central Region have halted their education in search of mushrooms.

Mushroom is said to be in high demand in the community and neighbouring towns reason for which the pupils are cashing on the situation to the detriment of their education.

The Headmaster of the school Mr. Arthur Mensah who is worried over the development indicates that this could further worsen the academic performance of the pupils who are lagging behind.

Mr. Arthur lamented that pupils prefer engaging in mushrooms trade risking their lives in the thick forests near the school despite several warnings.

He explained that the school children aged between 10 and 16 have resorted to this mushroom business to earn money claiming that their parents are not able to fend for them.

In the wake of this problem, the Headmaster disclosed that the school itself lacks adequate teaching and learning materials and appealed to District Directorate of Education, and other benevolent organisations to come to their aid.
