A Kumasi based radio personality, Adwoa Aprebi has charged Policy makers and Minister of Gender and Social Protection Hon. Oye Lithur to show commitment towards women especially, Widows in the country.

The Radio personality who doubles as an Ambassador of Rocare, producers of Genicure, believes the Ghanaian Widow faces herculean responsibilities but they always left to face their difficulties at all the times.

She is therefore urging the Ministry to give Widows preferential treatment under the Livelihood Empowerment Against Poverty (LEAP) to empower them to be self reliant, adding she frowns on seeing Widows begging with their kids on the streets.

Adwoa Aprebi who issued the statement in commemoration of World’s Widows’ Day that falls on today June 23rd, entreated Widows to be bold to not be perturbed by their challenges but equip themselves in oder to cater for their families.

Below is the full statement:

As a Genicure Ambassador, I would like to draw the attention of the policy makers especially the Ministry of Gender and Social Protection to put all needy widows in the country on the Livelihood Empowerment Against Poverty (LEAP). I have observed with passion the problems widows go through when they are left with the responsibilities of taking care of the children. The rising increase in the number of school drop-outs, youth in the armed robbery and prostitution are due to the way Widows are treated by the family and the state. I am of the view that, the Government and for that matter the Ministry of Gender and Social Protection are doing their best, but there are no deliberate plans to nip the problem in the bud.

As the World observes this special Day in honor of our widows, I want to also appeal to the wealthy ones in society not to wait until Christmas before they show responsibility towards Widows. They need the support of everyone in the country especially the privileged ones in the society.

I want to commend widows around the World who have remained strong in the absence of every support but they have taken good care of their wards through education and vocation. For the majority of the Widows who are abandoned by the state and families, I want to charge all of you to be strong and start doing something to improve your livelihoods. Happy World Widows Day.
