Quaye Nungua Foundation Awards First Scholarship

In January 2002, the Quaye Nungua Foundation awarded its first scholarship to a needy student. The scholarship, awarded to Mr. Samuel Afotey Otu, is the first scholarship grant in what the foundation hopes will be many programs to alleviate poverty and lack of education in Ghana, and particularly in Accra. In January, Afotey enrolled in ?Institute of Technology? at Tema to study a course in computer technology. In April, he received a new computer as part of the scholarship package. The foundation is developing other programs with Nungua Secondary School, and the Quaye Nungua RC Basic School (QNRBS) both located at Nungua.

In a separate event, Dr. Emmanuel Quaye, spokesperson for the foundation, presented a computer to Nungua Secondary School for use by staff. Education is a major project for The Foundation, and leaders of the foundation expect to develop other projects. ?The issues of interest to Quaye Nungua included culture and chieftaincy; education; and healthcare,? said Dr. Quaye The foundation has plans to build a children?s library at Nungua, across from QNRBS, and establish a reading program that will offer scholarships to students from Nungua Secondary School to read with school children from QNRBS. There are also plans to recognize excellence in teaching at Nungua Secondary School, and to encourage innovations in teaching, especially the teaching of local culture, history and language; as well as Math and Science. A Tradition of Philanthropy Dr. Quaye noted that what the foundation is doing now is a continuation of a decades old tradition of philanthropy by the family of the late Quaye Nungua. ?We want to build on the works and dreams of Quaye Nungua, and keep his dreams of progress and development alive? he said. He further stated that while the foundation was only recently registered as a non-profit organization, some of its programs and works have been in progress for years. ?We are only now formalizing what we?ve been doing for years,? he added. It will be noted that Quaye Nungua was a major contributor to the educational development of Nungua. Besides building Nungua Secondary School, he also built elementary and middle schools for the township. In 1982, he donated land and a school building to the Roman Catholic Diocese of Accra to establish the Quaye Nungua RC Basic School at Nungua.

The Quaye Nungua Foundation was registered in June 2002, as a Non Governmental Organization (NGO) under Section 24 of the Companies code 1963 (Act 179).
