A total of 270 people were displaced and properties valued over thousands of Ghana Cedis were destroyed as a result of rainstorm that hit the Asikuma-Odoben-Brakwa District.

The items destroyed included deep freezers and fridges, cooking utensils, learning and teaching materials, clothing, food stuff, computers and a number of buildings.

The affected areas were Habitat and Sorfo Nyamekye communities

Briefing the Ghana News Agency, Mr Albert Inkoom, and District Chief said the necessary arrangements have been made to provide the affected people with relief items.

He advised people living in the district to take advantage of the rains and plant more trees in their communities, especially around their buildings and schools to serve as windbreaks.

He said it is about time people stop endangering the environment to help minimise the impact of rainstorm and also to ensure incident free raining periods.

Mr Mubarak Watarra, the District National Disaster Management Organisation Coordinator, asked the people to eschew all negative practices such as cutting down of trees, putting up buildings on water ways and dumping of refuse into drains.

He said, such attitudes go a long way to have negative implications.

He appealed to NGO’s and corporate bodies to come to the aid of communities that have been affected by the disaster.
