The roof some schools, houses and clinics in Tumu were ripped off by severe winds
Rainstorms accompanied by severe winds have touched residential houses, schools and clinics in Tumu, Gwollu, and several communities in both Sissala East and West Constituencies, rendering about 200 persons homeless.
The National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO)office for Sissala East Municipality pegged the number of displaced people at 250, while 12 schools had their roofs ripped-up.
About 68 houses also had their roofs ripped-up or structures badly affected, according to the Sissala East Municipal NADMO Director Mr Issahaku Gban.
The affected communities and facilities included; Kwapun teachers’ headquarters, Jaffiasi, Tumu College of Education Demonstration School, Nabulo school structures, Bujan CHPs zone.
Kanton Senior High Secondary School had its wall tumbling down, while seven electricity poles were also broken down.
According to VRA/GRIDCO in Tumu, it interrupted power supply for several days in Tumu and some adjoining communities.
Gutters and bridges that were desilted before the coming of the rains were flooded.
Report from Kwapun indicated that a basic school in the community had its roofs ripped-up and the rains destroying books and valuable school documents.
A grinding mill for women at Pieng was also ripped-up, Mr Ghan said adding that other affected persons were still trooping to report about their situation.
In Gwollu, at the Hilla Liman Senior High School, the boys’ dormitories and the dining hall, as well as classrooms and a teacher’s accommodation in Sissala West District, was reported to have been ripped up.
“The devastation is serious especially at the boy’s dormitory and the dining hall,” according to school authorities.“Students are currently moving into some facilities, which are not affected but that has led to congestion”.
The District Chief Executive of Sissala West, Mr Mohammed Bakor, later said efforts were underway to assist the affected students in the Hilla Liman Senior High School.
