Rainstorms destroy buildings at Nkoranza

Nkoranza (B/A), April 1, GNA - Two separate rainstorms occurring within two weeks have destroyed 92 buildings in Nkoranza in the Brong-Ahafo Region.

The first rainstorm swept away 42 buildings whilst the second destroyed 50 buildings.

Mr. Evans Osei-Worae, Nkoranza South District Coordinator of the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO), told the Ghana News Agency (GNA) in Nkoranza on Tuesday private buildings affected were located at Nkoranza-Estate and Kassadjan.

Some of the affected buildings included Saint Theresa's Primary and Junior High Schools, Perpetual Roman Catholic Church, Roman Catholic Primary School, Standford International School and Dominion International School, both private schools.

Four staff bungalows and some parts of the roof of the mortuary at Saint Theresa's Hospital were also destroyed. Mr. Osei-Worae said a number of people had been displaced and were staying with relatives and friends.

Mr. Adu Antwi-Boasiako, Head teacher of the Roman Catholic Primary School, said about 90 pupils whose school buildings were affected were temporarily having classes under trees. About 120 students of Saint Theresa's JHS were also reported to be taking their lessons under trees.

Officials of the district NADMO office are compiling a list of the victims and buildings to the Regional Headquarters of NADMO in Sunyani for onward submission to the National Headquarters for support.
