Who is Rambo...?

There are two people who are said to cause ex-Flt. Lt. Jerry John Rawlings insomnia. Major Sulemana, the one-time Second in Command of the Reece Regiment who was credited with the arrest of Rawlings when he attempted to topple a government in the 70s, and Michael Molley, also known as Rambo, who uncovered many attempts at toppling the Limann administration.

Major Sulemana on arrival in the country from exile warned Rawlings against uttering treasonable statements, adding that if he attempts any funny thing, he will realise that "the men have arrived", in obvious reference to the return of many of the soldiers who were thought 'disloyal' to the so-called revolution and the PNDC government as a result of which they were hounded out.

Rambo, also known by his colleagues as Gargo was with the 5th Battalion of Infantry. So effective were his reports about Rawlings' manoeuvres at the time that he was made to work with the intelligence network. Although he kept uncovering the plots, his antidote for them was not accepted and he was eventually sent abroad for a course during which the coup, which toppled that government, took place. The coup vindicated him for he had time without number warned the government about what Rawlings was up to.

Rambo stayed in the US for 21 years and returned to Ghana recently to see 'positive change' for himself, during which he entertained his comrades in arms.

In a speech, he warned that they who have lived in exile would not allow any adventurers to toy with the destiny of the country again.

"We would not allow anybody to send some of the citizens of the nation outside her borders again," he warned. He was especially angry that Rawlings had said he would transfer President Kufuor. He advised him to stay clear of any adventurism, as they who felt the effect of the past twenty-one years would not allow a repeat of history.

He asked the former soldiers to be committed to the peace and stability of the nation imploring them to maintain their bodies so that they are fit to serve the nation.

He said the former soldiers have returned with greater experience, which they would put at the service of the nation to ensure peace and stability.

President Kufuor, he said, is the people's president and anybody who dares disturb him would meet the wrath of the same people.

The morale of the former soldiers, most of who are still in their prime, was visibly high and they spoke in military parlance throughout the function.

At the function was an assembly of some of the country's finest soldiers from various units like the Reece Regiment, 5Bn, Intelligence and a former commander who asked for anonymity.

The former commander called on the soldiers to see their role today as God-ordained.

Ghana, he added, is where it is today by the grace of God and they who had assembled would be assigned further roles in the service of the nation at the appropriate time. Rambo has since gone back to the United States to prepare for his final return home. He told The Accra Daily Mail he is returning to join the efforts to make Ghana a better place to live in.
