The Western Regional Police Command recorded 17,957 crime cases this year, compared to last year’s figure of 24,525 reducing by 6,568 cases.
A total of 45 rape cases were recorded in 2013 as against 77 recorded in 2012, reducing by 32 cases.
The Western Regional Crime Officer, Chief Superintendent James Kofi Abraham disclosed this at a soiree organized by the Regional Police Commander for senior police officers and journalists in Sekondi on Tuesday.
Other crime cases recorded included 54 murders, 8 attempted murders, 68 robbery, 10 attempted robbery and 7 in possession of narcotic drugs.
Chief Supt. Abraham said the Command arrested hardened criminals at various highways and communities who were prosecuted and sentenced to various jail terms between five and 50 years.
He commended other security agencies and the general public for providing vital information and assisting the police to arrest such criminals.
The Regional Crime Officer applauded the Drug Law Enforcement Unit (DLEU) of the Police Service for arresting drug peddlers and addicts at their hide-outs at various ghettoes and slums.
“This contributed to the reduction of narcotic cases drastically in the region,” he said.
The Regional Police Commander, Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCOP) Kofi Boakye, said the soiree aimed at strengthening the cordial relations existing between the Command and the media to help combat crime in the region.
He commended the media for cooperating with the police to maintain law and order in society.
