Mr. Joseph Henry Mensah, the Minority Leader in Parliament is reported to have re-echoed his belief that the Rawlings-led PNDC junta, which seized power from an elected government in 1981, deserved to be overthrown through any means, including force of arms.

In a front page splash story, the Ghanaian Chronicle says Mr. Mensah was reacting to President Jerry Rawlings' rebuke of the people of Brong Ahafo for voting him into Parliament when they knew he had attempted to overthrow his military government through force of arms.

President Rawlings is quoted as saying: "This is a man who is known to have attempted to purchase arms, was arrested and almost jailed while he was outside the Ghana". The paper says the President made the remark while addressing cadres of the Association for the Defence of the Revolution (ACDR) in Tamale. According to the Chronicle, President Rawlings also wondered why the Brongs voted for Mr. Mensah, especially when the NDC government had brought so much development to the region, including providing them with electricity and roads. The paper says the President lamented saying that in spite of such massive development, the Brongs had slapped the NDC in the face by voting for Mr. Mensah, as MP for Sunyani East.

The Chronicle says Mr. Mensah, in his forthright response, declared his "unshakeable belief that a people, who are forcibly deprived of their political freedom, have an inalienable right, under every principle of history and politics, to retrieve that freedom, using all means available to them, including armed force".
