The Upper West Youth Parliament has appealed to the contractor working on the Regional Youth Resource Centre in Wa to consider mounting chairs and roofing the popular stands of the multipurpose sports arena.

The appealed was made by the second Deputy Speaker of the Youth Parliament, Mr James Anabiga, who led a team of the House to inspect progress of work at the Centre.

Mr Anabiga said it was important the contractor and the government came together to settle their differences and consider roofing and mounting chairs at the popular stands for the benefit of the many young people who may not be able to afford the VIP stands.

“We want to appeal to you to at least roof the popular stands even if you and the government failed to reach an agreement on the proposed design, but we want to also appeal to government to consider the proposal by the contractor,” he said.

But the Project Site Engineer, Mr Abdul Razack, said though there had been so many changes to the initial project plan, the design did not include roofing and providing seats for the popular stands.

“The project was designed in such a way that only the VIP stands will be roofed and seats mounted, but with the popular stands we are done with it since the project design did not come with roofing and mounting of seats at the popular stands,” he said.

According to the Engineer, it was proposed to government to increase the contract sum to consider roofing the stands and also mount chairs, but there was no response to the proposal.

A groundbreaking ceremony was performed in May last year for the construction of the GHS7million facility, which was expected to be completed within nine months.

The Centre accommodates a FIFA standard football pitch, an eight lane athletics tracks, basketball, tennis and volleyball Courts, ICT, entrepreneurship and counselling centres, modern restaurant, a gym, washroom and flood lights.

The Upper West Youth Parliament is a nonpartisan youth group launched in 2010 to enhance youth involvement in decision-making and contribute meaningfully to national development.

It is expected to hold duty-bearers to be accountable to the youth and bring about development that benefits the masses
