Accra, Sept. 28, GNA - The Red Cross Society of Ghana on Friday said it had mobilized about 400 volunteers and staff to provide first aid, help evacuate people to safe places and assist in salvaging belongings of affected peoples in the three northern regions - Northern, Upper East and Upper West.

A statement signed by Professor Stephen Adei, President of the Society, said it was also distributing relief items and providing essential health and hygiene education to victims.

It said a six-member field Assessment and Coordinating Team from the International Federation of the Red Cross were in the affected areas to assess the situation to enable the Federation to provide adequate support.

The statement said the international body had launched an appeal for 2.1 million Swiss Francs to support the Ghana Red Cross's operations in providing relief to affected persons in the three regions. The government says 56 deaths have been recorded so far. It says 34,336 houses have collapsed about 332,548 people have been displaced in the affected regions and 70,526 hectares of land with a production potential of 144,430 metric tonnes of crops have been destroyed.
