Governance expert Dr. Benjamin Otchere-Ankrah has charged the Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin, to do the needful following the Supreme Court ruling quashing his ruling that declared four seats vacant in the House.

The Speaker declared the Agona West, Suhum, Amenfi Central, and Fomena seats vacant, but according to a 5-2 majority verdict delivered by the Supreme Court on Tuesday, November 12, the Speaker's declaration is unconstitutional.

"In a majority decision of five to two, with Lovelace Johnson JSC and Ahmadu Tanko JSC dissenting on the issue of jurisdiction, the plaintiff's action succeeds. The full reasons and orders of the court shall be filed with the registrar by the close of day tomorrow, November 13, 2024. This is the judgment of the court," stated Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo.

However, the nation awaits the next action by the Speaker since Parliament is currently on indefinite suspension after the Majority and Minority Caucuses failed to reach a consensus, hence not having a quorum to undertake government business.

Contributing to Peace FM's "Kokrokoo" show, Dr. Otchere-Ankrah asked the Speaker to lay aside his ego, stressing that he should think about his legacy after retiring from Parliament.

"Reduce your ego. Position is not possession. A time will come when you will be referred to as a former Speaker, but what will be your legacy?" he said.

He further admonished the Speaker to ensure Parliament reconvenes as soon as possible to continue government business.
