Refrigerator mechanic jailed 10 years

Wa, Nov 10, GNA- A Circuit Court in Wa on Wednesday sentenced a 26-year-old fridge mechanic to 10 years imprisonment in hard labour for stealing over 120 million cedis and two mobile phones.

Felix Kofi Mensah pleaded guilty to unlawful entry and stealing. Prosecuting, Deputy Superintendent of Police Laar Baaman told the court that the complainant Madam Agnete Fjierback, is a member of a Danish Medical Students Association on attachment at the Tumu District Health Administration, while Mensah is based in Wa.

DSP Baaman said on September 23, this year, at about 1500 hours the complainant and her colleagues left their residence for town but on their return, they detected that someone had broken into their rooms and made away with 8,456 United States dollars, 23.2 million cedis, and 1,500 CFA and two cell phone kept in a safe.

The Prosecutor said the complainant suspected the convict who had left the town the same day for an unknown destination.

He was however, traced and arrested at Dzodze in the Volta Region and brought to Tumu for interrogation.

DSP Baaman said that when the convict was interrogated, he confessed and disclosed that he had used pact of the money to buy an Opel Astra Saloon car, deposited 13 million cedis at the Denu Branch of the Agricultural Development Bank (ADB) and transferred five million cedis into a friend's account in Accra.

The prosecution added that the vehicle and the 13 million cedis together with one mobile phone were retrieved from the convict. Passing sentence, the Presiding Judge, Alhaji Mohammed Mustapha ordered the Police to return the stolen items recovered to the complainant.
