The Regional Maritime University (RMU) has successfully secured accreditation to commence three programmes next academic year, starting September, 2018.

The programmes are Master of Science in Environmental Engineering, Master of Science in Bioprocessing Engineering, and Bachelor of Science in Accountancy.

Mr Kwame Ofori Asiamah, the Minister of Transport, speaking at the 20th Board of Governors Meeting of RMU, commended the Board for adopting appropriate strategies and plans that had culminated into remarkable level of achievement for the University.

The meeting is to take stock of the University’s progress since the last meeting held in Monrovia with a view to ensuring that it continues to enhance its enviable reputation as an institution providing quality maritime education and equipping young men and women with the requisite skills to contribute to the development of the maritime sector within the sub-region and beyond.

He said it was worth noting that apart from deliberations on matters that directly affected the University’s administration, the Board meetings also offered an opportunity to promote regional cooperation geared towards the socio-political and economics integration of countries in the sub-region.

In this respect, he said, Ghana had been at the forefront of efforts aimed at promoting the unity and integration of the African Continent and was committed to ensuring the success of the RMU.

“We will also endeavour to provide the necessary resources to support infrastructural development of the campus,” he said.

The Minister said this year’s annual budget provided some funds for the completion of ongoing projects by the end of the year, indicating that Ghana had also made part-payment of her contribution to the sum of eight million Ghana million.

Dr James Kollie, the Board Chairman of RMU, said the commencement of the three programmes would expand avenues to increase revenue of the University and expressed the hope that management would put in place measures to ensure large patronage of the programme.

He commended the Government for its unrelenting commitment to the progress of the University adding that the RMU remained the true and living monument of regional integration that had stood the test of time since 1983.

Dr Kollie commended the Gambian Government for sponsoring a hostel facility for students and appealed to other member countries to undertake similar projects for the University.

He appealed to other member countries to continue to honour their obligations as signatories to the Instrument that established the RMU and pay their annual budgetary contributions.

He called on Board Members to take advantage of collaborations with other stakeholders in the maritime and allied industries to help develop the University’s infrastructural capacity.

He reiterated the dedication to ensuring that the financial strength of the University was augmented.
