Saltpond (C/R), March 8, GNA - The Ministry of Education Science and Sports, is to review the syllabus for the New Education Reform Programme to make room for the inclusion of Religious and Moral Education (RME) as directed by President John Agyekum Kufuor. The President gave the order following concerns from some religious groups and some concerned citizens over the integration of RME into some subjects to reduce the number of subjects taught in schools when the reform was introduced.
Mr Ato Essuman, Chief Director of the Ministry disclosed this to the Ghana News Agency (GNA) in an interview at the 51st Independence Anniversary Parade at Saltpond. Mr Essuman, who is also a Member of Council of State, said the Ministry and the Ghana Education Service would take steps to address the President's directives.
The Chief Director urged Ghanaians, especially religious bodies not to see the inclusion of RME in the curriculum as a magic wand, which could address the moral decay in the society. "Educational institutions alone cannot solve the moral decay, which has engulfed the society; the home, the church and the society have a stake in addressing the problem," Mr Essuman stated. "It is only when all the stakeholders play their roles effectively that the problem can be solved to allow discipline and order to return to the society," he added.
Mr Robert Quainoo-Arthur, Nfantseman Municipal Chief Executive, Miss Vivian Etroo, Municipal Director of Education, Mr Samuel Adabo, Municipal Fire Officer and Patrick Yeboah, Chief Inspector of Police jointly inspected the parade made up of a contingent of 33 schools and civil organization groups and also took the salute. The Municipal Chief Executive read President Kufuor's speech to the colourful gathering.
