Remembering and Honoring Osagyefo Dr. Kwame Nkrumah On the 35 Anniversary of his Death

On April 27, 1972, death laid its icy hands on the mortal remains of a great man called Osagyefo Kwame Nkrumah in Bucharest, Romania, far away from his birthplace of Nkroful, in the Western Region of Ghana. Because of that great man’s positive contribution to the course and redirection of world history, it is important to remember and honor him. Thus, on this 35th anniversary of the death of Osagyefo Kwame Nkrumah, we the members of Convention People’s Party, North America (CPPNA) have an obligation to recall his good works for Ghana, Africa and the world.


CPPNA remembers and honors Osagyefo Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, the founder and leader of the Convention People’s Party of Ghana, which served as the vanguard for the liberation and emancipation of the Gold Coast and Africa from European colonization.


CPPNA believes in the sanctity of the fact that Kwame Nkrumah and the CPP conducted one of the most significant social revolutions in the second half of the twentieth century, culminating in the political independence for the people of the Gold Coast after which the former imperial British colonial territory adopted a new name, Ghana. Thus, the attainment of independence by Ghana ended one historical epoch on the global political landscape, and entered a new one filled with freedom from external authority for all Africans, imbued with a strong sense of self-determination and self-identity.

Kwame Nkrumah’s sagacity in fashioning and championing a “non-aligned” foreign policy approach for Ghana attracted undue attention and worry from world powers engaged in their own “Cold War.” Thus, Nkrumah and Ghana became pawns in the geopolitical dynamics of the period following the end of the second world imperialist war.


Through the instrumentality of a section of the Ghana military institution and police apparatus, the regime of Kwame Nkrumah and the CPP in Ghana was overthrown, at the behest of renegade United States security operatives. Kwame Nkrumah became exiled from the country he had led to found whereupon he lived the rest of his life in Conakry, Guinea, at the invitation and welcome of his freedom-fighting compatriot, President Sekou Toure.


Kwame Nkrumah’s government was deposed in a military coup d’etat at the wee hours of 24th February 1966. The military usurpers of power suspended the Constitution of Ghana, abrogated the country’s parliament and proscribed the CPP.


In the absence of Kwame Nkrumah and without the benefit of his leadership, and during the period since he was forcefully deprived of his constitutional authority as president of Ghana, the country, as well as the rest of Africa, have become victims of several phases of neo-colonization, currently masquerading as ‘globalization.’ The economy of Ghana and the rest of Africa have become dependent, acutely, on grants, loans and assistance from foreign sources. The national budget of Ghana is prepared by taking into critical account, expected largess from so-called ‘development partners.’

Undaunted by the actions and behavior of enemies of freedom and progress in Ghana and Africa, and anchored in the believe of the promise of Nkrumahism, supporters and adherents to the ideals and wisdom of Kwame Nkrumah have mustered the political will to resurrect and invigorate the Convention People’s Party, to resume its role as the vanguard for emancipation of Africa.


The re-invigorated Nkrumahist CPP, working through its constituencies, branches and limbs, is dedicated to lead Ghana and Africa into a new epoch of reality. This new epoch calls for economic emancipation of Africa.


Adherents of Nkrumahism believe economic emancipation of Africa can happen, quicker, only through the unity of the continent with one government.


We believe resurrection of the idea of “African personality” into its concrete reality will energize all Africans to move as one, on the path towards progressive economic development, whereby the destiny and survival of our people will no longer depend on foreign handouts.

As the resurrected CPP moves forward Ghana and Africa into a new day of economic independence, the CPPNA invokes the spirit of our political ancestors to provide us with the wisdom and direction to help its members realize the reality and ideals of our set goals, mission and vision.


CPPNA is determined to help change the minds and hearts of those who do not believe in Nkrumahism to believe. We have not lost faith and hope in Osagyefo Kwame Nkrumah.


Our optimism is not waned in the promise that “Africa Must Unite!
