In the wake of the issues some renal patients are going through as a result of their predicament, Michael Asante, a renal patient at the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital, has disclosed the impact of the disease on his life.
Speaking with GhanaWeb’s Ishmael Batoma on #SayItloud, Asante recounted how the disease has robbed him of his dream to become a lawyer and left him jobless.
Narrating his ordeal, he said he suffered a severe stroke in 2021, four years after he was diagnosed with kidney failure.
The severity of the stroke forced him to resign from his job and withdraw from the law program to which he had been admitted.
“I used to work with an insurance company," he said. "I was forced to stop and quit the law program. In 2021, I was forced to stop because I had a severe stroke from the condition. There was too much stress. I had to stop the program and also resign from the insurance company."
"I had to stop because the family got involved and said that if I kept stressing myself, things might get out of hand. How I recovered from that strong in 2021, I still do not know, but, in the end, I realized that I had to stop the program and resign,” he added.
According to Asante, he was advised to seek employment in the public sector due to the stressful demands associated with some private companies. However, he said he heeded their advice, but his search has proven futile.
Left with no job to do, Michael Asante told the host that he now relies on families and sometimes church members for financial assistance.
“It’s not easy to work with this condition when you are in the private sector because they require a lot of us. It hasn’t been easy. Mostly I had to depend on friends and family. Most of the time, I have to beg, so I have to call people and ask for help. Sometimes, I also get support from my church members. That is how I have been managing this situation,” he told the host.
