Accra (Greater Accra) 4th June '99

The Committee on Environment, Science and Technology on Thursday laid before Parliament the report on Montreal Protocol on substances that deplete the ozone layer.

Also known as the Copenhagen Amendments/Adjustments Final Document, the objective is to further accelerate the phasing out of ozone depleting substances.

The reasons for the Ratification of the Copenhagen Amendment/Adjustments to the Montreal Protocol include the building of global partnership and co-operation in protecting the ozone layer, in order to save mankind from its adverse effects.

The ozone prevents some part of the suns' rays, which is harmful to life from reaching the surface of the earth.

The ratification also seeks to re-affirm Ghana's commitment to the objectives and purpose of being a party and to strengthen Ghana's position in obtaining diverse support in the form of financial help, technology transfer, capacity building, education and training.

The committee disclosed that since becoming a party to the Protocol, Ghana has benefited from the United Nations and other technical co-operation to the tune of 1.2 million dollars, excluding full financial support to government officials to attend various meetings on ozone layer protection.
