Kwabenya, Dec. 17, GNA - A sample survey conducted on different iodised salt revealed deficiencies in some of the items displayed on the market to the detriment of innocent citizens. Speaking to the Ghana News Agency in an interview, Mr J. B. Nyarko, Research Fellow of the Ghana Atomic Energy Commission, said ten assorted iodised salts were sampled by the Commission at three months intervals for one year.

Out of the number, three were imported the rest produced locally. Mr Nyarko who did not disclose the trade names, said in some cases there were no iodine at all, others, the levels are too high which might be an indication that the production level is not well defined. On the other hand, he said, the absence of iodine might be due to the products' exposure to sunshine heat.

Mr Nyarko said, the imported ones have consistent value over the year.

He therefore, said a particular laboratory must be resourced to do regular monitoring from factory to market levels to get the companies do the right thing.

The selection of the laboratory must be of Ministry of Health's choice and the exercise must cover the whole country.
