Residents in Accra must respond to clean environment - Adjei Sowah

Mr Mohammed Adjei Sowah, the Accra Metropolitan Chief Executive has called on residents of Accra to take up the responsibility of cleaning their environment to improve sanitary conditions and hygiene.

He said the apathy among the people in the metropolis must change because it was evident that the AMA alone could not undertake the clean-up exercises in communities.

Mr Sowah made the call in an interview with the Ghana News Agency at Abossey Okai, in the Ablekuma Central Constituency during the National Sanitation Campaign clean-up exercise.

He said the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) had embarked a number of interventions as part of its efforts to ensure the attainment of the Presidential initiative to help improve the sanitation conditions in Accra and logistics had been provided to help manage the 3,000 tons of waste generated daily in the metropolis for the AMA to achieve its mandate of making Accra the cleanest city.

He said the private sector had been engaged by the Government to provide a wide range of services to help mitigate the growing challenges of waste management in the country.

“The AMA recognises that the way forward is to collaborate with private sector institutions, media and residents, hence the need for a call to all residents in Accra to involve themselves in clean-up exercises,” he said.

Mr Ebenezer Nartey, the Member of Parliament for Ablekuma Central Constituency told the GNA that a clean and healthy environment was the surest guarantee of good health and urged the people to keep their surroundings clean.

He said he had waged war against filth to ensure that the programme of promoting good health in the area would be sustained to create a clean and healthy environment.
