Residents of Abutia Amegame can now heave sighs of relief as their plea for potable water has been heard. Their joy has been revived as Jodi Constructions Limited has come to their rescue with the rehabilitation of the broken-down water system for the community.

Earlier, Ghanavi TV reported how residents of Abutia Amegame draw water from a dirty pond and depended on other sources of water which are unreliable and unsafe for human consumption.

The story revealed that the Ho West community could not afford GHC1,240 for repair works on the only borehole, constructed and handed over to them by the Rotary Foundation and Rotary Clubs of Accra West and Ho, when it broke-down in 2017.

Residents accused Unity Rural Bank, formerly Adaklu Rural Bank, of deliberately frustrating them and failing to reimburse an amount of GHC1,297.75 which is the total of savings deposited at the now defunct bank meant for maintenance of the water system.

Some aggrieved community members lamented over the situation in an interview with Ghanavi TV and appealed for support from government and philanthropists.

The report attracted public attention and sympathy with some Ghanaians in the United Kingdom and the States making juicy promises to help Abutia Amegame.

But a Ghanaian-owned construction firm, JODI Constructions Limited, delivered on the promise it made and took up the project.

Executive Director of JODI Constructions, Greg Parbey was alarmed when he saw the visuals of the water the people of Abutia Amegame were drinking and using for other domestic chores.

His concern was that prolonged dependence on unsafe water by the residents could make them susceptible to waterborne diseases. He, therefore, vowed to get his organisation to save the situation.

“This doesn’t look good. This water cannot be consumed by humans so something must be done. Even though my organisation has exhausted funds allotted for Corporate Social Responsibilities (CSR), I’ll make sure I mobilise some money for the repair works on the borehole for Amegame as soon as possible,” Mr. Parbey said when he interacted with Ghanavi TV following the publication.

Exactly a week after his promise, Jodi Constructions contracted a borehole drilling company and paid for the project to kickstart. The repair works was completed on December 21, 2019, which rekindle the joy of the entire Abutia Amegame community.

The residents, especially the women could not hide their excitement and joy when clean water started gushing out from the mechanised borehole.

“We can’t thank our helpers enough for their kindness. Thanks to them we can also boast of pipe water. In the entire Abutia, only Amegame has a borehole that’s connected with electricity. We don’t have to use our strength in pumping water, we only have to turn on the switch and water starts flowing,” one of the women happily said.

“Another thing is that, our pipe has been connected to a reservoir so that we can have water even when there’s no light. We are overjoyed by this gesture. God bless the givers. May they never lack anything in life,” another excited woman added as they proudly fill their pans with water from the pipe.

Prior to the repair of the borehole, a day after the story highlighting the plight of the community hit the internet, a purified water manufacturing company located at Batoume junction in the Agitome Ziope District, Country Springs Mineral Water, donated over four hundred bags of sachet water to the community. Each household received at least ten (10) bags of water.

Country Springs Mineral Water is also credited for the water reservoir for Abutia Amegame as part of its contribution to the safer water project for the community.
