Residents of Asesensu flee from community for fear of military brutality

Ressoldd Military personnel who were involved have been invited to give their statements

Residents of Asesensu, a farming community in the Wassa Amenfi East District of the Western Region have fled the area for fear of military brutality following an earlier clash between them and the military personnel which led to the injury of a 32-year-old resident.

The victim identified as Yaw Nkrumah was shot in the ankle by the soldiers who fired sporadically to disperse the angry residents who were engaged in open confrontation with a Chinese miner.

Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Olivia Eyrabena Adiku, who is the Western Regional Police PRO, confirmed the incident indicating that about 6 persons have so far been arrested in connection with the incident.

“The area is currently calm. Armed police have proceeded to the town and they are to ensure there is calm in the area. The injured person was treated at Dunkwa Government Hospital and discharged yesterday and has been given a medical form for examination. Six persons were arrested by the military as people who assaulted them and handed over to us. Their caution statements have been taken and they are currently undergoing interrogation. The security man who also said to have fired a pump action gun has been asked to give his statement”, she revealed

She added that all military personnel who were involved have been invited to also give their statements in relation to the incident.
