Residents of Nwabi displaced by floods

Nwabi (Ash), June 1, GNA - About 100 households have been displaced when their homes were inundated by floods at Nwabi, near Asante-Akropong in the Atwima-Nwabiagya district. The flood follows continuous rainfall in the town for the past two weeks.

Briefing the Ghana News Agency at Nwabi on Wednesday, Mr Thomas Ofori-Donkor, the District Chief Executive, said most buildings in the town had been weakened as a result of periodic flooding, a situation which had been a major source of worry to the district assembly. He said residents needed an alternative site for relocation to avoid any looming danger as a result of the town's proximity to the dam. The Owabi Dam was built in 1928 and had not seen any major renovation.

Mr Ofori-Donkor said the situation was beyond the assembly's capability and therefore appealed to the Ministry of Works, Housing and Water Resources and other related agencies to initiate steps to salvage the situation before disaster strikes. The DCE expressed appreciation to sympathizers of the displaced victims who offered them places to lodge temporarily.
