Residents of Kpone Katamanso District Assembly (KKDA) have called for rapid and efficient measures to tackle sanitation to forestall health challenges as a result of pervasive unsanitary practices in the district.

Poor sanitation, they say, is of grave concern in their communities since the practice of indiscriminate disposal of both solid and liquid waste has become even more rampant lately.

These concerns were raised by some residents at a town hall meeting in Sebrepor in the Kpone-Katamanso District organised for residents to interact with officials of the Assembly on their annual action plans, budgets and audits.

The public forum provided a platform for the residents and assembly officials to interact constructively on key development issues.

The residents, including traditional leaders, opinion leaders and teachers appealed to the District Assembly to as a manner of urgency provide all households with waste bins as a step in dealing with the sanitation menace in their respective areas.

They suggested periodic clean-up exercises, sensitization of community members about good sanitation practices and enforcement of sanitation by-laws by the Assembly.

Alhaji Essa Antiaye Tetteh, the District Chief Executive of KKDA, said the Assembly recognized the sanitation situation in the district and was working assiduously to tackle the menace.

He urged members of the Assembly to collaborate with the Assembly to achieve desired development adding that development is a shared responsibility which calls for the active participation of all stakeholders.

Mr Nii Laryea Afotey-Agbo, Greater Accra Regional Minister, who participated in the public forum, expressed dismay at the activities of land guards in the District and said he would collaborate with the military to ruthlessly deal with the "social menace".

He noted that it had become increasingly worrying as the Police had reneged on their efforts in tackling the menace with the urgency it deserved.

Mr Afotey-Agbo, who is also the Member of Parliament for Kpone-Katamanso, called on Assembly members to respect authority and see the development of the district as their utmost priority, while staying non-partisan.
