Resign if you want to contest as Parliamentary candidate – NPP to MMDCEs, regional executives

The acting General Secretary of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) John Boadu has cautioned all Metropolitan, Municipal, District Chief Executives (MMDCEs) who wish to contest as parliamentary candidates on the ticket of the party to resign their current positions before they can be able to do so.

He said the resignation should be at least three years before the ensuing national elections.

This directive, according to John Boadu, applies to only constituencies where there is a sitting Member of Parliament.

“All persons serving as Metropolitan, Municipal, District Chief Executives who wish to contest in constituencies where the party has sitting members of parliament are not eligible to contest unless they resign from their current position at least three years before the ensuing national elections” he stated.

Speaking to the media Wednesday afternoon at the NPP headquarters, the acting General Secretary also added that Regional and constituency executives are not eligible to contest in constituencies where the party has sitting members of parliament.

He said if any executive has an ambition of becoming a member of parliament, that executive must resign three years before the general elections.

“Regional Chairpersons, regional secretaries, regional treasurers, constituency chairpersons, constituency secretaries and constituency treasurers are also not eligible to contest as parliamentary candidates in constituencies where the party has sitting members of parliament unless they resign three years before the national general elections” he stressed.

Mr. Boadu said this is a resolution from the national council of the party and it is in the best interest of the party as well as government.

He emphasized that the resolutions by the national council do not apply to constituencies where the party has no candidate in parliament.
