Resource the devt of deprived regions- Danish Ambassador

Dalun (N/R), June 11, GNA - Mr Flemming Bjork Pedersen, the Danish Ambassador to Ghana has called on the government to commit more resources to the development of deprived regions in the country with the aim of improving the quality of life in those communities. He said gave the assurance that the Danish government would work hard to complement Ghana's efforts of alleviating the plight of deprived regions.

Mr Pedersen was speaking at the Annual General Meeting of Ghanaian Danish Communities Association (GDCA) at Dalun in the Tolon/Kumbungu District on Saturday.

The Ambassador stressed the need for the decentralization policy to be pursued more effectively by devolving more authority to the District Assemblies to enable them carry out more development agenda of their own.

He commended Ghana for being the first country in the sub-region to be reviewed under the African Peer Review Mechanism (APRM) and noted that the country had scored high marks in the promotion of good governance, democracy and the rule of law and also made significant gains in the economy.

Dr Abubakr Al-Hassan, Chairman of the GDCA, said under the second phase of the Community Life Improvement Programme (CLIP), 40 hand-dug wells had been constructed at the cost of 1.2 billion cedis in the Yendi, Gusheigu and Karaga Districts.

The beneficiary communities paid only five per cent of the total cost for the construction of the wells.

The communities include Kpabuya, Chingaya, Makantiya, Champongyili, Kasali, Bichindo and Chidanyili in the Yendi District. Others are Gnoring, Tandogu, Gusheinayili, Kutigu-Tindang, Kore,Kunduli, and Naganga in the Gusheigu and Karaga Districts. Dr. Al-Hassan said under a Women Loans Scheme, the scheme provided micro-credit to a total of 36 women groups covering 1,080 members.
