Respect the Constitution - Omanhene of Agogo

Nana Kwame Akuoko-Sarpong, Omanhene of Agogo Traditional Area and a former Minister of State, has asked Ghanaians to give meaning to the country's Constitution by showing a strong inclination towards law and order.

He noted that the Constitution with its provisions for good governance, fundamental human rights and freedom of expression among other things could remain mere paperwork if the people choose to travel the path of indiscipline and lawlessness.

Nana Akuoko Sarpong was speaking at the launch of the second Constitution Week Celebration in the Ashanti Region at Agogo in the Asante Akim North District.

The theme for the celebrration organised by the National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE) is: "The Constitution, Traditional Values and Good Governance".

The Omanhene said the politicians could enact the best of laws but that would not change the situation of the people, if the citizens decide to do things at variance with the rules of acceptable behaviour.

Nana Akuoko-Sarpong pointed out that, notwithstanding, the protection given to the chieftaincy institution by the Constitution, the Chiefs lack the muscle to bring social order in their communities.

The Minister of Local Government and Rural Development, Mr Kwadwo Baah-Wiredu called on the NCCE to ensure the establishment of more civic clubs to make people more aware of their civic rights and responsibilities.
