Resume work strike action has no basis - Aidoo

Akoon (W/R) Aug. 30, GNA - Mr Joseph Boahen Aidoo, Western Regional Minister, on Monday appealed to striking workers of Gold Fields Ghana Limited (GFGL) at Tarkwa to resume work because the strike action has no basis.

He said there was no laid down procedure for the sharing of profits made by the company every year, because both the management and workers have not agreed on any procedure to share profits therefore, laying down tools would amount to flouting labour laws, which had serious implications.

Addressing striking workers of the Company at Akoon near Tarkwa, Mr Aidoo said owing to this anomaly, there was the need for re-negotiations, adding: "a mistake is not a failure rather it opens a way for building upon the past."

He told the workers that they could not re-negotiate while on strike therefore, they should resume work and re-negotiate with the Management.

Mr Aidoo pleaded with the newly appointed Workers Committee to carefully analyse issues raised in their grievances.

Mr James Amponsah, a spokesman of the workers said they lost confidence in the local Union which was dissolved and a new committee appointed to re-negotiate with the management.

Workers of GFGL embarked on a sit down strike since last Sunday alleging that the Company did not give an appreciable percentage of the end of year profit to them.
