A retired major of the Ghana Army, Major Daniel Kweku Bonsu, has been arrested in the United Kingdom for allegedly exporting marijuana in a 20-foot container.

The treated marijuana, which weighs three tones is estimated at ?129 billion. Two clearing agents and an officer of the Customs Excise and Preventive Service (CEPS) detailed at the Tema Harbour are also helping the security agencies in their investigations as regards how the large consignment left the shores of the country without being detected. A highly-placed source at the Narcotics Control Board (NACOB) disclosed this in an interview in Accra yesterday.

The source said that, the names of the clearing agents and the customs officer are being withheld for security reasons. The retired officer was arrested when he showed up at a UK Port to take delivery of the container.

It further explained that investigations have established that Major Bonsu owns a multi-billion mansion at McCarthy Hills in Accra. Major Bonsu (rtd) was arrested last June 11 in London by the British Security Agencies. He will be arraigned before a London High Court next month.

It said it is also believe that the suspect owns a number of property in the country and investigations are ongoing for verification. Major Bonsu (rtd) was enlisted in the Ghana Armed Forces in May 1970 and went on retirement in February 1990. The source stated that the suspect allegedly shipped the consignment which was contained in a 20-foot container to the UK through the Tema Harbour in the Greater Accra Region in the middle of this year.
