The National Executive Committee of the University Teachers Association(UTAG) has asked the UTAG-UG to retract and apologise for its unwarranted impeachment threats against the National President.

This comes after the Emergency NEC meeting held on 14th June 2020.

Members at the said meeting held that “UTAG-UG erred in issuing the two (2) letters, as they breached both the Branch and National Constitutions. They should have resorted to laid down procedures to seek redress for their grievances if any.”

Meanwhile, NEC reiterated that it’s already aligned with the recommendations proffered by UTAG-UG on the Public Universities Bill (PUB).

“UTAG-UG position on the PUB, i.e. to offer “some recommendations informed by experience and best practices globally”, is in consonance with the position of NEC that the PUB should not pass in its present form, except subject to the proposed revisions of UTAG. It is important to reiterate that our position is born from the fact that the Bill raises serious constitutional matters, which UTAG will not hesitate to institute legal proceedings to challenge them before the Supreme Court.

It added:"Whereas individual UTAG branches have the right to engage the media on the PUB, and any other issue of public interest, all branches are to note that decisions of NEC are binding on all branches. NEC, therefore, encourages all UTAG branches/members to follow due process when addressing issues.

d. UTAG has a united front and NEC is solidly behind the National Officers to steer the affairs of UTAG.”
