Locals in Nkonya in the Volta Region have bemoaned the magnitude of small arms or light weapons being hoarded by residents of Alavanyo, a rival community in the area.

They claim they are overwhelmed with locally manufactured weapons that end up in the hands of combatants of their rival community, calling on the security apparatus to clamp down on the movement of arms into the area.

An opinion Leader at Nkonya, A.K Donkor who spoke to Fiifi Banson on Anopa Kasapa on Kasapa 102.5 FM Friday said locally manufactured weapons are very common in the area to the extent that almost all household own light weapons, including AK-47, cap firing guns, rifles among others.

“There are locals that manufacture the guns in their community. It will even shock you that their own Chief has in his possession guns in his palace. When you go to his room, you see this AK-47 and other weapons in his room. We have reported this to the Minister and he asked us to remain calm as they investigate the matter. But the problems keep escalating.”

He said the other faction must stop the belligerent acts and make compromises to the efforts in peace talks set to bring lasting peace to the area.

It will be recalled that renewed violent clashes in the age-old dispute resulted in the death of two people and others sustaining gunshot wounds on Wednesday.

The latest attack is believed to have been carried out by some residents of Alavanyo, a rival community in the area. The two towns have been under a dusk-to-dawn curfew over a protracted land dispute spanning almost a century.
