The Asogli State has asked the Governing Council of the Ho Technical University to immediately reverse its decision to rename the University as the “Dr. Ephraim Amu Technical University.”

The chiefs at a News conference in Ho said it was improper to rename the University without recourse to the chiefs and people of Asogli State through whose efforts the then Ho Technical Institute was established in 1968 and upgraded to Ho Polytechnic and now Ho Technical University.

Togbe Adzie Lakle Howusu XII, Warlord of Asogli State who addressed Journalists said the chiefs had stated their opposition to the decision to rename the University, but the Council remained adamant and wondered why the high interest to rename the University instead of addressing myriad of challenges it was facing.

He said all other Technical Universities were maintaining their original names.

He said the chiefs communicated their disapproval of the re-naming to Dr. Archibald Yao Letsa, the Volta Regional Minister after all attempts by the chiefs to engage Chairman of the University Council were unsuccessful and “we shall resist the re-naming with all our might. The youth are already agitated and we do not want to get there.”

Togbe Adzie Lakle said the alleged unwillingness of the Chairman of the University Council to meet the chiefs showed “gross disrespect” and said, “ we are peace loving people but…we shall not sit down for anyone or a group of people to undermine our authority with disrespect.”

He said much as Asogli recognised the achievements of Dr. Ephraim Amu and his contribution to the country’s development, it deemed it improper to do that without due diligence and consensus building.

Togbe Adzie Lakle said any such decision in the future should be done in consultation with relevant stakeholders, including the chiefs of Asogli State, custodians of the land.
