Review Law that established UDS - Students

Wa, Oct. 18, GNA - Students of the University for Development Studies (UDS) on Monday called on Parliament to review the Law that established the University and instead enact an Act of Parliament to support its operations.

The Students said an Act of Parliament could adequately address most of the problems confronting the University such as the provision of seed money when the University was establishment.

The call was made at a News Conference at Wa to launch the 13th Annual Students Representative Council (SRC) Week celebration. The theme for the celebration is; "HIV/AIDS Education and Conflict Prevention: Building a Positive Attitude- The Role of the University Student".

Mr Gyireh Paschal Fang-viel, SRC President said although past students of the University were contributing to national development, its survival and sustenance was being hampered by 'the mindset that it was established to serve sectional or political interest.'

He called on the Minister of State for Tertiary Education and Regional Ministers of the Northern, Upper East and West Regions to assist the University have access to the operations of the Metro Mass Transport Company at all its campuses to facilitate movement of students to and from lecture.

Mr Fang-viel said the University had only four 60-seater Tata buses, which were in adequate for even one-year group.

The Students therefore, appealed to stakeholders, benevolent organizations and philanthropists to support them with six more Tata buses and ten pick-ups for their practical programmes on the field. They called on Parliament to review the University's Third Trimester Field Practical Programme (TTFPP) and establish a fund to reduce the burden on students who participate in the programme. The Students called on the Government to urgently solve the water problem facing the Nyankpala campus that had led to high expenditure on Tanker services.
