President John Dramani Mahama speaking at the Russian University of Transport
President John Dramani Mahama has expressed hope that Ghana’s national airline will resume operations before the end of his tenure, as his government works to revive the country’s aviation industry.
Speaking at the Russian University of Transport on Ocotober 27, 2026, where he received an honorary doctorate, the President said efforts were underway to restore the national carrier as part of broader plans to improve Ghana’s transport infrastructure.
“It is my hope that before I leave office we will have Ghana Airways back in the air,” he said.
President Mahama made the remarks while outlining ongoing and planned investments in the transport sector, including the expansion of ports and airports, the reconstruction of major roads and the development of the railway network.
He said the government was also working on railway infrastructure, including the introduction of new freight trains, to improve the movement of goods and strengthen connections between communities and commercial centres.
“New freight trains and the expansion of our railway network are also ongoing. And even as I speak, we are working on revamping our cherished national airline,” he said.
The President described transport infrastructure as a catalyst for national development, stressing the importance of efficient systems to facilitate trade, improve connectivity and expand access to economic opportunities.
He also called for stronger collaboration between Ghanaian and Russian educational institutions, particularly in transport engineering, railway development, logistics, road safety and traffic management.
According to him, partnerships between the institutions could help develop the specialised skills needed to modernise Ghana’s transport sector.
The proposed revival of the national airline forms part of broader efforts to strengthen the country’s transport network and improve its capacity to support economic activity.
However, the President did not provide details about its proposed ownership structure, fleet, financing and operational arrangements.
