Rid roads of rickety cars - Nunoo-Mensah

Former national security advisor Brigadier-General Joseph Nunoo-Mensah has bemoaned the recent spate of road accidents and charged authorities to get rid of all vehicles in poor condition.

Having identified poor vehicles as a major cause of road accidents, he wants authorities to take action to deal with the menace.

He told Class91.3fm’s Executive Breakfast Show host Ekow Mensah-Shalders on Wednesday March 9: “We need to start tackling our problems, beginning with the simple ones. This road worthiness, for example, in Kintampo – the crash killed so many people after his [the driver’s] brakes failed. It doesn’t cost anything.”

He accused some individuals at the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority (DVLA) of certifying vehicles which do not qualify to be on the roads.

“Some people at DVLA are making money out of it, so they don’t want people to get involved. Train mechanics properly to know what to inspect in the vehicles and do them properly,” he urged.

He also lamented the complex processes involved in the acquisition of road documents from the DVLA and called on authorities to devise a stress-free procedure, which would not require applicants queuing up for days at the company’s premises.

“Today my cars don’t have tags and I said I will not renew them. Let them arrest me and take me to court, and I will tell the judge that I can’t go and queue for two days to get documents for my car. It doesn’t make sense. Let the people be disciplined to do their work,” he stressed.
