The Ghana National Road Safety Commission has, with the sponsorship of DANIDA, put in place a five-year working strategy to reduce road accidents in the country.
The commission has, in this regard formed a seven-member public education drama performing group named “PASSE PARTOUT” under the leadership of Mr Noel Arcton-Tettey, a public relations practitioner.
The drama performing group, which serves as a road safety task-force is currently touring some parts of the country, including the Central Region, to educate all road users.
One of such road safety campaign drama, with public education talks, was held at the Agona Swedru Main Lorry Park. It was attended by more than 600 people made up of drivers, their mates and the general public..
Addressing the gathering, Mr Arcton-Tettey explained that the main aim of the National Road Safety Commission and the group is to sensitise all road users, particularly, drivers, cyclists and pedestrians, to prevent the prevailing spate of road accidents in the country.
Mr Arcton-Tettey disclosed that research has shown that 43 per cent of victims who die through road accidents are not passengers but pedestrians, with 46 per cent of this being children under 16 years.
He, therefore, advised drivers and all road users to be extra careful, adding that “your car will save a life, while your carelessness will destroy people’s lives and property”.
Mr Arcton-Tettey expressed gratitude to DANIDA for sponsoring the campaign and called on other organisations to come to the aid of the commission to enable it to help educate the general public.
