Road Safety Committee visits Tema accident scene

Tema, July 30, GNA -- Chief Superintendent Victor Tandoh, member of the National Road Safety Committee on Friday called on drivers to respect and appreciate their job as its very vital in the society. He said the slighted mistake on their job could end up the lives of many and therefore entreated them to be serious and do away with negative issues that are likely to change their moods and cause accidents. He made the call when members of the Committee led by Mr Noble Appiah, Acting Executive Director visited the accident scene at the Tema-Aflao station on the Tema Motor way round about which claimed five lives including a small

boy and a lunatic and injuring six people on Thursday. The Committee was told at the scene by some people that a driver had driven carelessly and overtaken the driver of the gas tanker as it was approaching the motor way from Afienya. He said the gas tanker driver grew angry and wanted to cash up with the other driver and deal with him so in the process he veered off his lane and run through three stationary taxis killing three people on the spot, two others at the hospital and injuring others and landed in a gutter. Major Tandoh described the action of the tanker driver as loss of concentration on the job and therefore asked the Tema MTTU personnel to arrest the driver, Kofi Hansen who according to one of the personnel has been granted bail.

Mr Noble Appiah, called on the MTTU personnel at Tema to hold periodic refresher courses for the drivers while they must also ensure that drivers observe traffic regulations at the station. The drivers expressed grave concern about uncompromising attitude of some big trucks on the roads and called on the Road Safety Committee to discipline them. They complained that most big trucks take advantage of their sizes to bully the smaller vehicles by driving carelessly on the roads, especially on the highways and rendering them helpless.
