Ghana hopes to reduce road accidents and injuries by 20 percent by the year 2010 through a national road safety strategy launched on Friday in the capital, Accra.

Over 1,800 deaths and 10,000 injuries are recorded annually on Ghana's roads, figures which authorities estimated could increase if appropriate measures were not taken.

Ghana recorded 11,000 accidents in 2000 with 46 percent of deaths involving pedestrians, the agency reported. Reckless driving and drunkenness are among the most common causes of the accidents.
