Road to Catholic University College Needs Maintenance - V/Chancellor.

Sunyani (B/A), June 30, GNA - Professor James Hawkins Ephraim, Vice-Chancellor of the Catholic University College of Ghana, on Monday urged the Brong Ahafo Regional Co-coordinating Council to assist in the maintenance and construction of the only access road to the university. "In view of the state of the road, taxi and bus drivers are hesitant to ply the road, resulting in high transportation cost for students, staff and other users of the road", he said.

The Vice Chancellor made the call when he paid a courtesy call on the Brong-Ahafo Regional Minister, Mr. Kwadwo Nyamekye Marfo, a press statement from the University released to the Ghana News Agency said. It said the visit was aimed at cementing the fraternal relations and to enhance effective collaboration between the University and the RCC.

Professor Ephraim expressed the University's appreciation for the extension of electricity to the new campus in December last year. He urged the Council to tap the quality human resource available at the university, especially as the region prepared to celebrate its golden jubilee anniversary.

Prof. Ephraim outlined the contributions the University was making to the development of the Sunyani Municipality and the region as a whole, including the provision of quality education for students and the workforce, the stimulation of economic activities through the renting of houses, purchasing of goods and services by students and staff alike, and other benefits.

He stressed the need for the provision of boreholes for the university and its surrounding villages, building of private hostels and other essential services to meet the increasing intake of students in the university.

The Vice-Chancellor urged the regional administration to explore opportunities for investment as a way of contributing its quota to the growth and development of the university.

Mr. Nyamekye-Marfo gave the assurance that the RCC would continue to support the institution, saying it would be on the list of communities earmarked for the drilling of boreholes in the course of the year.

He assured the Vice-Chancellor of the Council's support in putting the access road to the university in good shape this July as a short term measure, while he explored the possibility of constructing the road properly in the near future.

Present at the meeting were Mr. Emmanuel K. Kaba, senior assistant registrar, and Mr. Charles Alex Cosmos, public relations officer, both of the University.
