Achimota (Greater Accra Region) 19, Sept. The Minister of Roads and Transport, Mr. Edward Salia, today commissioned the reconstructed railway bridge at Achimota. The collapse of the bridge crippled rail services resulting in Accra-bound trains terminating journeys at Dome, 13 kilometres from the city. The bridge, which collapsed during heavy rains last June, cost 200 million cedis. Mr. Salia congratulated the Ministry of Roads and Transport, Ghana Highway Authority (GHA) and Ghana Railway Corporation (GRC) for their collaborative effort in reconstructing the bridge, which is a vital rail link to Accra. He said the Government is committed to improving the performance of the GRC by introducing private sector participation. Mr. Salia said the policy of the newly created Ministry of Roads and Transport is to encourage more private sector participation in the management and operation of transport services.
