A police officer who posed as an armed robber has assisted his colleagues to arrest three people who had wanted to rob a sand-winning company at Asutsuare in the Damgbe West District of the Greater Accra Region.

The police detective (name withheld) attached to the Akuse District police office pretended to be very interested in an intended robbery after an informant had informed the police of the planned robbery.

According to police source, a lady who worked with the sand-winning company informed a male friend to hire armed robbers to rob the company of an amount of GH¢40,000 which had been kept at the company’s office at Asutuare.

The police said Eunice Horlali, the lady working with the sand-winning company, had informed one Emmanuel Hor, a police labourer at Akuse, to get some people to come and rob the company so that they could share the booty.

Emmanuel Hor in turn informed one Gideon Assumaning, 24, about the deal, and he also showed interest.

Gideon Assumaning was also tasked to organize the operation and so he also contacted someone who was a police informant about the operation.

According to the police, Assumaning told the police informant to help him secure the services of armed robbers for an operation and the informant told the police about the intended operation.

The police detective, who feigned interest, started speaking to Assumaning on phone and told him that they were armed robbers who were very interested in the operation.

The police and Assumaning agreed that the armed robbers would take GH¢30,000 while the group would take GH¢10,000.

The police ‘armed robber’ arranged with Assumaning on how the operation would be done and where and when they would meet for it.

According to the police, the detective and three other policemen dressed like armed robbers and smoking cigarette, met Assumaning at the Akuse cemetery for the operation.

Assumaning, unaware that the ‘armed robbers’ were policemen who had disguised themselves, took them to the office, where they met Eunice Horlali and threatened her to show them where the money was, after which they arrested she and Assumaning.

The police revealed their true identity and went to arrest the other accomplices.

The four were put before an Odumase-Krobo Circuit Court on Thursday, April 5 for conspiracy to commit crime and stealing and will appear in court again on April 19.
