Robbers kill cop at Ayirebikrom

A policeman has been shot dead at Ayirebikrom near Manso Nkwanta in the Amansie West District of the Ashanti Region.

The deceased, a Lance Corporal, who was with the SWAT unit of the Ashanti Regional Police Command, was with a colleague when the incident occurred.

The two policemen were part of passengers on board a sprinter Benz bus with registration number AC 644 – 15, when eight men wielding AK47s and a pump action gun attacked the passengers on the outskirts of Ayirebikrom last Wednesday.

The robbers shot the two cops along with some of the other passengers. The officer who survives with minor injuries has been treated and discharged.

The robbers seized the weapons of the policemen in the attack.

The regional police commander, DCOP Akwasi Mensah Duku, told the media that the deceased was rushed to St. Martin’s Hospital at Agroyesum but was pronounced dead on arrival.

Five passengers also sustained injuries in the the attack but are responding to treatment.

Mr Doku said the police proceeded to Dome Deposo, near Manso Nkwanta upon a tipoff and were able to retrieve four AK47s and the weapons seized from the two policemen.

“We have started with the investigation and appeal to the public to assist with information so we can arrest those who committed this crime,” he stated.
