The police in Asante Bekwai in the Amansie East District has arrested the leader of an armed robbery and a car stealing syndicate operating in the area.

Jidila Kasim, 20, was arrested at Essumeja, near Bekwai at dawn on Friday, when he and his two accomplices now on run tried to abscond with a taxi they had seized from its owner at gun point.

An eye witness, who pleaded anonymity told the GNA that the suspect and his gang hired the taxi that was been driven by one Inusa Mohamed to Kyekyewere, a village near Essumeja at about 0200 hours on Friday.

He said on reaching the outskirts of Essumeja, the gang pulled out a gun and knives and seized the car and drove it away.

While the robbers tried to restart the engine of the car, after it went into a ditch, the victim reported the incident to the Essumeja police.

When the robbers spotted the police approaching they took to their heels but the police managed to arrest Kasim.

When the GNA contacted Superintendent Charles A.A. Bukari, Bekwai District police Commander, he confirmed the story and said the suspect was in police custody pending further investigations.
