Roman Fada replaces Akua Donkor as Ghana Freedom Party's Presidential Candidate

Broadcast Journalist Philip Kwabena Agyemang, popularly known as Roman Fada has been elected as the new presidential candidate for the Ghana Freedom Party to replace Akua Donkor following her demise.

Confirming his candidacy in an interview with Atinka FM on Monday, November 4, 2024, Roman Fada who is also a radio and TV personality stated that the decision followed extensive discussions and consultations among the party’s leadership to replace the late Akua Donkor.

He further explained that the party chose him for the nomination because he was already contesting in the upcoming December polls alongside Akua Donkor as her vice presidential candidate representing the party.

“It is true and we all know what happened a week ago today around 10 pm when Akua Donkor passed. God rest her soul. As you know, I was the running mate for the party’s 2024 presidential candidate ahead of the elections. She is no longer with us so the party’s leadership deemed it right for me to replace Akua Donkor in the elections. So, if you heard I am the new flagbearer for Ghana Freedom Party,” he confirmed on Atinka FM’s morning drive.

However, his running mate has yet to be officially announced by the party.

GhanaWeb previously reported on the party’s intention to select a new candidate to represent them in the December polls.

Akua Donkor’s death

The founder of the Ghana Freedom Party passed away at the Greater Accra Regional Hospital on Monday, October 28, 2024, due to respiratory-related issues, according to her 2020 running mate, Ernest 'Adakabre' Frimpong Manso.

She was number 3 on the ballot paper before her death.

She died at the age of 83.

EC’s directive

Following the death of Akua Donkor, the Electoral Commission directed the party to nominate a new presidential candidate.

The directive ensures that GFP still has a chance to contest in the 2024 presidential race.

According to the EC, the directive is in line with Article 50 (4) of the 1992 Constitution, which states that if a candidate dies after the close of nominations but before the election, “a further period of ten days shall be allowed for nominations.”
