Rotary raises US $400,000 for polio exercise

Kumasi (Ashanti Region) 11 Oct 1998 The Rotary Foundation of California in the United States has raised US $ 400,000 to support the polio immunisation programme in Ghana this year.

Mr Sam H. Okudjeto, Past District Governor of the Rotary Club, said 67 Rotarians from Rotary Foundation in California would be in Ghana to participate in the first round of the polio immunisation day in November.

Addressing the Presidential Ball of the Rotary Club of Kumasi East at the University of Science and Technology (UST) in Kumasi last Saturday, Mr Okudjeto said the Rotary Foundation will also provide US $235,000 for the Vitamin "A" project to help supplement national efforts at improving upon the sight of children in Ghana.

Mr Okudjeto, therefore, called on Rotary Clubs in Ghana to identify as many projects as possible and properly document them with the view to soliciting assistance from Rotary Clubs world- wide.

Mr E.A. Yirenkyi, outgoing President of the Rotary Club of Kumasi East, said the club has, in collaboration with the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA) and the Ashanti Regional Co-ordinating Council, embarked on a sanitation and beautification project in Kumasi.

The project, which will last for five years, is estimated to cost 40 million cedis with the Rotary Club bearing 20 million cedis of the total cost.

Mr Frank Yawo Agbemadzo was later sworn-in as the new President of Rotary Club of Kumasi East for the 1998/1999 term. GRi
