The Royal Oyoko Clan (family) in Worawora, located in the Oti Region, has called on President John Dramani Mahama, the Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, and the Regional House of Chiefs to intervene in the ongoing chieftaincy crisis in the Worawora Traditional Area.

The call was made during a press conference held on January 26, 2025, to address what the clan described as a grave threat to the traditional and cultural integrity of the region.

Obaasima Nana Ama Anowaa Nyarko, Secretary of the Royal Oyoko clan, outlined the series of events that have led to the current tensions, attributing the crises to the illegitimate occupation of the paramount stool by individuals who do not belong to the royal matrilineal lineage.

She emphasized the need for urgent intervention to restore peace and order to the area.

“Worawora belongs to the Asantehene, and he alone can determine the rightful occupants of the paramount stools,” Nana Anowaa Nyarko stated.

She further appealed to President Mahama, whose leadership, she believes, could provide the necessary support to resolve the matter amicably.

Tracing the origins of the dispute, Nana Anowaa Nyarko revealed that the last legitimate paramount chief, Nana Asare Baah II, ascended the stool through an illegitimate patrilineal claim.

According to her, his enstoolment of a non-royal queen, Nana Awerewa I, further compounded the issue, leading to ongoing conflicts over the rightful succession.

Despite agreements to revert to the matrilineal system upon the demise of these occupants, Nana Anowaa Nyarko said Obaapanin Abena Sarfoah Awerewa II, has defied tradition and refused to step down.

“This disregard for the matrilineal tradition has resulted in escalating tensions and instability in Worawora,” she noted.

In a bid to address the impasse, the Royal Oyoko clan has invoked the sacred Great Oath of the Asantehene against Obaapanin Abena Sarfoah Awerewa II and others.

Under Asante tradition, this act prohibits the accused from enstooling chiefs or queens until the matter is resolved by the Asantehene. However, the clan alleges that the alleged self-styled queen has continued to perform enstoolments in defiance of this injunction.

There are two paramount chiefs enstooled at the town at the moment , one by the alleged illegitimate queen mother and the Self styled paramount chief Nkosuohene .

According to the Oyoko family , petition has been sent to Otumfuo in addition to the great oath . The said great oath was used upon the queen mother as well as a petition against the enstoolment of both chiefs .

The family alleged that they’re being hindered by the Kontasehene because the great oath involved against the queen is useless and nobody has the right to render Otumfuo’s great oath .

Meanwhile Otumfuo is the only right person to swear chiefs allegiance to become a chief and anybody who fails to swear such an oath is not qualified to be come a chief .

The Royal Oyoko clan called on Otumfuo Osei Tutu II to uphold the traditions of Asanteman by ensuring that only legitimate heirs occupy the stools. They also appealed to President Mahama to use his office to mediate and support a peaceful resolution to the dispute.

“We believe in the wisdom and expertise of His Royal Majesty Otumfuo Osei Tutu II and the leadership of President Mahama to bring lasting peace to Worawora,” Nana Anowaa Nyarko expressed.

In addition, the clan warned the general public and institutions against engaging with the disputed claimants, describing such interactions as risky and illegitimate.

“We caution the public to refrain from dealing with these pretenders who seek to undermine our cultural heritage,” the Secretary said.
