SAEMA engages 24-hour Traffic Company

Takoradi, March 18, GNA - The Shama Ahanta East Metropolitan Assembly on Thursday inaugurated a 24-hour traffic towing Service at Takoradi to help it enforce parking, road and vehicular safety within the metropolis.

Some 25 traffic wardens trained jointly by the assembly and the company were also inaugurated to ensure the appropriate parking of vehicles.

Mr. Philip K. Nkrumah, the Metropolitan Chief Executive, said the lack of a proper regulation was hampering the enforcement of traffic and road regulations.

He said rampant haphazard parking, stopping and picking passengers at unauthorised places and gross indiscipline among drivers had been a source of worry for the assembly.

Mr. Nkrumah these acts apart from posing danger for other road users had on some occasions affected the social and economic activities in the metropolis.

"It is primarily to mitigate this state of affairs and also to deal with indiscipline arising in the metropolis especially in the central business district that this joint exercise between the assembly and the company is being implemented," he stressed.

Mr. Nkrumah said the decongestion of the Takoradi Market Circle was not meant to punish traders but rather to create conditions that would promote business.

He stressed that all women who were affected by the operation had been re-located to the Apremdo market where shops, stores, stalls and sheds had been provided for them.
