SAEMA garbage removing exercise on course

Sekondi, April 17, GNA - Several heaps of garbage in many suburbs of the Sekondi-Takoradi twin city have been cleared to disposal sites in a renewed effort by the authorities to improve upon the environment. The exercise to rid the twin-city of the garbage was launched by the Shama Ahanta East Metropolitan Assembly (SAEMA) about six months ago and it is expected to be completed by the end of May.

Mr. John Gorkeh-Miah, Manager of the Waste Management Department of SAEMA, who conducted the Ghana News Agency round some of the sites, said the central government and the Metropolitan Assembly were providing funding.

SAEMA is providing more than 50 garbage containers at designated refuse dumps and other strategic areas.

He said the Assembly had provided machinery and equipment for the prompt removal of garbage to final disposal sites. Mr. Gorkeh-Miah said his department was determined to enforce byelaws on sanitation to the latter and appealed to residents for cooperation to ensure improved sanitation to check the outbreak of diseases.
